TTR Barnes

The TTR Barnes team is saying goodbye to one our best loved and most eccentric members of staff, as we congratulate Peter Oxman on his retirement from his position as associate. 

Peter has worked as an accountant for more than 50 years, training with a local firm of accountants before setting up his own practice in 1976. In 1994, Peter merged with Thorne Thurlbeck & Russell, which later merged again to become TTR Barnes in 2001.

Since then, Peter has been an instrumental member of our team, specialising in SMEs, sole traders and partnerships.

Away from the world of accountancy, Peter is a man of many hobbies – a collector of rare coins and stamps and a keen dancer. However, his real passion has always been the beautiful game.

Peter was selected as centre half aged 10 and continued to play in that position for the next 52 years through schools football, professional trials, the Northern League, the Wearside league, the North East Amateur league, the Tyne and Wear league, the Wearside Combination league and various Sunday leagues, culminating in the Sunderland Over 40s league.

In fact, Peter continued to play well into his 60s, with a former teammate describing him as “a tough tackling centre half, cultured is not the way to describe his style.”

He added: “In the days when rules on tackling were less strict, he was always careful to get some part of the ball. He would still be playing today if there was anything left of his knees!”

While he no longer takes to the pitch himself, he remains a lifelong Sunderland fan and season ticket holder.

Former TTR Barnes director Trevor Thorne, who has known Peter for more 40 years, said: “He will be missed for his determined eccentricity. He is probably the last person at TTR Barnes to use a fountain pen on a daily basis!”

TTR Barnes director Allan Russell added: “Peter’s contribution to the firm has been fantastic, not just in terms of his work but also his big personality and sense of humour.

“He is something of a larger than life character and the office will be a different place without him. Everything he does he does with great determination, charisma and enthusiasm. He will be remembered fondly by everybody who has worked with him and has certainly left a lasting legacy here”.

Peter will be given a send-off with a meal and night out with colleagues on Monday, before a retirement party planned at the Barnes pub in January – complete with a Beatles tribute band!

Peter will be sorely missed by the TTR team and we wish him all the best as he enjoys some well-deserved time with his wife, Michelle, and son, Richard.
